A FEW DAYS LATER
You, Sif and the Warriors Three were rushing around all day, making sure everything was perfect for Jane and Thor's big day. You, especially. It was a long day, to say the least. From the time you woke up, you were overseeing something. Jane had specifically designated you as the one in charge. While you were flattered and loved being maid of honor, you also got a little crazy when you wanted something to be perfect. The only time you got a break was to eat a quick lunch. Then, a tiny pang of guilt hit you. It was nearly high noon and you hadn't spoken to Loki at all that day. You asked for a piece of paper and pen and scribbled a little note for Loki.
I'm so sorry I haven't been to see you yet. Wedding stuff is keeping me rather occupied. I'll be in later on.
You had a servant take the note to Loki as you got up to go oversee the organization outside. The wedding was going to be held in the garden. So far, everything was going smoothly. The flowers looked radiant. The altar was set up exactly where it needed to be. You couldn't wait for the actual wedding.
"[Name]?" came a female voice.
You turned around to see Sif.
"Oh, hey Sif. What's up?" you asked.
She smiled at you.
"All is well here. Take a rest for a little while."
You figured a little down time would do you good. You thanked her and jogged inside. You trekked down the halls toward Loki's room. When you got there, you were out of breath. You walked into the room to find Loki gazing solemnly out the window. You walked up to him and put a hand on his shoulder.
"Hey," you said gently.
Loki smiled and turned around, wrapping you in a tight hug.
"How's the countdown until the wedding going?" he asked sarcastically.
"A little better, now that I've finally managed to get away," you replied. "I'm really excited, though. My best friend is getting married in a few hours!"
"I am glad you're happy."
"Well it'll really be something. I can't wait until I can unwind with a piece of cake and a glass of wine."
"It should be fun for you."
you're not going?"
You looked up at Loki. A touch of bitterness flashed across his face.
"I was invited, but I
opted out. And, as I've said, I cannot leave."
You felt really sad. You had looked forward to a nice evening with him. You had been excited to have the opportunity to dance with him. And show him the joys of cake. But, you guessed not.
"Damn. I was looking forward to hanging out with you tonight," you said quietly.
"I am sorry."
"No, don't be sorry, Loki. I'll come see you at some point during the reception, okay?"
"I would like that very much."
You and Loki sat down on his bed. You smiled at each other. You decided to take a leap and took Loki's hand. His fingers were slightly chilly. His face suddenly got serious.
" he said quietly. "I need to--,"
Sif poked her head in the door.
"Jane needs you, [name]," she said.
Sif quickly left. You looked apologetically at Loki, whose eyes were now cast down on the floor.
"Loki?" you asked.
"Go on," he said, smiling. "We'll talk more later."
"Okay," you replied, kissing him on the cheek. "Bye."
Once you left, Loki grabbed a pillow, held it to his face, and yelled into it. He could not catch a break.
You hadn't realized how quickly time was moving. It was getting later in the day. You bolted over to Jane's room, where she sat waiting for you.
"Hey!" you said. "What's up?"
"[Name], would you do my makeup for me?" she asked. "You're better at this stuff."
You smiled happily. You felt happy tears coming on. You were so excited for Jane. You sat down in front of her, gathering some cosmetics and brushes from her vanity. You brushed some light gold eye shadow over her eyelids, then some bronze at the outer corners. You lined her eyes with chocolate brown eyeliner and put some shimmery powder on her cheeks. Then, you had her put on some sheer pink lip gloss. She was quite happy with the result.
"So, how about your boyfriend?" Jane asked.
"Loki is not my boyfriend," you replied.
You wished that wasn't true. It hurt a little to say it.
"Besides, this is your day."
"True, but inquiring minds want to know."
"I just came from hanging out with him."
"You going to hang out with him tonight?"
"He's not going."
"My best guess is that it stems from his lifelong issues with Thor."
"You don't seem too pleased about it."
"Even if I'm not, do you want a convicted war criminal at your wedding?"
You and Jane laughed. When you thought about it, you didn't really care about what happened in New York. Well, you cared, it just seemed like such a distant thing. Besides, Loki was so sweet to you. The vicious war criminal on the news and the man you had spent the last few days with weren't quite the same person.
"Okay, get into that dress!" you squeaked, waving your hands like an idiot.
It was getting to be the time when people were starting to arrive for the ceremony. You could hear the din of the crowd echo in the palace. While Jane was changing, you took the opportunity to change into your dress and grab your makeup. You got back to Jane's room as quickly as you could. She looked absolutely stunning in her dress and veil. She looked like she was about to burst into tears.
"Don't you dare ruin your makeup," you joked.
Jane laughed. You sat down and applied your makeup. Soon, Sif came in wearing her dress. You did her makeup, too. You were then also joined by Thor's mother. Much girly chatter ensued. Soon, it was time for the ceremony.
